With Christmas only a few days away, for many, decorating and making preparations for it have been going on for quite some time. The major focus of Christmas is in giving and receiving gifts. Often times we hear it referred to as “the season of giving” or we are encouraged to have a “spirit of giving.” However, as followers of Jesus we should always embody a “spirit of giving” and it should never be confined to just a season of the year. Why do we practice gift giving in connection with Christmas, and is there a biblical precedent for it?
First of all, the tradition of gift giving is founded upon the Wise Men (or Magi) who, as recorded in Matthew 2:1-12, brought treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the young child. Certainly this is a wonderful Christmas tradition and commemorates the birth of Christ. Nevertheless, I wonder how many people truly understand that this practice is rooted in the Bible.
Most importantly, our gift giving and receiving represents the greatest gift ever given, which can be freely accepted by all who will receive it. That gift is Jesus and His salvation. This truth is beautifully revealed John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
This Christmas, may we have a fresh perspective on our gift giving and receiving as we celebrate the birth of Jesus and the unspeakable gift of His love and salvation. May we demonstrate the “spirit of giving” by generously giving to our churches, to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, as well as the many other opportunities available to bless and benefit others during this season. Most of all, may we be diligent in sharing with others how they can receive the true gift of Christmas—Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Marcille and me!
